Als Bob Zimmerman 16 jaar is en 6 maanden op de universiteit zit krijgt hij een ernstige ziekte, die hij overwint. In 1960 veranderd hij zijn naam naar Bob Dylan. Liftend en zingend trekt hij rond naar New York. Na een tijdje rond gehangen te hebben krijgt hij een baantje in Gerde's Folk Club waar hij zingt. In 1962 treed hij op tijdens het Newport Folk Festival. Hierna gaat het snel. In 1966 gaat hij op tournee met de groet The Band als begeleidingsband die later ook beroemd wordt. In deze periode ontwikkeld hij zich tot een bijzondere componist en zanger. In datzelfde jaar krijgt hij een erntig auto-ongeluk waarbij zijn nekwervels worden beschadigd.
In 1968 maakt hij zijn comback. Zijn muziek wordt commercieler en countryachtiger. Tijdens het concert For Bangladesh laat hij zijn sociale gezicht weer zien. Ook gaat hij in een film spelen "Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid" van Sam Peckinpah. Ook maakt hij nog steeds veel platen. Veel van zijn concerten worden vastgelegd op film. Hij blijft nog lang actief in de popwereld met de LP 'Desire' in 1976.
